The Harbour Light Boscastle
This is how the Harbour Light looked before the flood which devastated Boscastle on 16th August 2004. The shop had been completely refurbished for the 2004 season and carried new ranges of clothing, some more unusual ornaments and souvenirs and a large range of Christian books and special occasion cards. The Harbour Light was probably the most photographed building in Boscastle with virtually every visitor having one or two treasured pictures.

This is how it looked the day
after. The volume and force of water together with the debris being carried along (trees, cars, even vans
and motor caravans),
was finally too much. The building collapsed and was
almost totally washed away.
The building had stood for probably 400 years and had survived many earlier
floods, but, as we now realise, nothing quite as extreme as this. Like a number
of other buildings in Boscastle, though none as old, it could not withstand the
volume and sheer force of the flood and what it carried with it. So what now?
